Medicare Questions, Answered

Straight answers from a broker who has been doing this in Albuquerque since 1985.

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare broker?

No. Medigap Options is paid by the carrier when you enroll, and the commission is the same whichever plan you choose. You pay nothing extra versus enrolling on your own.

What's the difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage?

Medigap adds to Original Medicare and works with any doctor who takes Medicare. Medicare Advantage replaces how you use Medicare through a private network plan. Doug compares both for you.

Can I switch Medigap plans later in New Mexico?

Yes, but after your six-month open enrollment window most carriers in New Mexico ask health questions before accepting you. Doug pre-screens that before you apply.

When should I call if I'm turning 65?

About three months before your birthday month. Your Initial Enrollment Period starts then and runs seven months. Calling early gives you time to compare without a deadline.

Which Medicare plans work with my doctors in Albuquerque?

Medigap works with any provider that accepts Medicare. Advantage networks differ by carrier. Doug checks UNM, Presbyterian, Lovelace and your specific doctors before you enroll.

Do you only serve Albuquerque?

No. Doug meets Albuquerque metro clients in person and serves the rest of New Mexico by phone and video. He's also licensed in 15 other states for clients who move or travel.

What is an annual plan review and is it free?

Every fall Doug checks your current plan's new-year premium, drug list and network against the alternatives. It's free for every client, every year, and takes about half an hour.

Do I need Part D if I don't take any medications?

Usually yes. Going 63 days without drug coverage after you're eligible adds a lifetime penalty to your Part D premium. Doug can find a low-premium plan that avoids it.

Which carriers does Medigap Options represent?

Doug is appointed with United American, Mutual of Omaha, Aetna, Cigna, HealthSpring, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Devoted, Manhattan Life, UnitedHealthcare, Transamerica, Foresters Financial, Family Benefit/Trinity Life, Combined Life, American Home Life and Corebridge Financial. Not every carrier offers every plan type in every county, so ask him which ones apply to you when you call.

How do I get started?

Call (505) 578-5852 or use the form on the contact page. Tell Doug whether you're turning 65, reviewing a current plan or shopping for a quote, and he'll take it from there.
