New to Medicare in Albuquerque: Your First Conversation, Free

New to Medicare consultation for someone turning 65 in Albuquerque

What it is

A new to Medicare consultation is one conversation, in person or by phone, where Doug lays out how Medicare works for your situation and what you need to do by when. It covers Part A and Part B enrollment and whether you should delay Part B if you're still working, the choice between a Medigap plan and a Medicare Advantage plan, Part D drug coverage, and the dates that apply to you. The goal is that you leave knowing your own timeline and your two or three realistic plan options, with a clear answer on what each one costs. Medigap Options has done this for Albuquerque families since 1985 and there's no charge for it.

When it makes sense

You should book this the moment you're within three months of your 65th birthday, or as soon as you know you'll be leaving employer or union coverage. Your Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long and starts three months before your birthday month. Missing it means a delayed start date and, for most people, a Part B late penalty that lasts for life. People still working past 65 with employer coverage have their own rules, and getting them wrong in either direction is expensive. If you've already been mailed a Medicare card and a pile of plan brochures, you're in the window right now.

What you need to enroll

Bring your Medicare card if you have it, a list of your doctors, your prescription bottles, and a rough sense of your monthly budget. If you're still working, bring the name of your employer plan. Doug will confirm your enrollment dates, check your doctors and drugs against the plans that fit, and explain the trade-offs in plain English. If you want to enroll that day, he handles the applications. If you want to think about it, that's fine too. The consultation is free and there's no obligation.
